The top two tourist thing you have to do in Hamburg, aside from walking and exploring the city, are:

1) The Harbour Tour. Explore the seaport on the river Elbe in Hamburg, also known as Germany’s “Gateway to the World”. It’s absolutely ginormous.

2) Miniatur Wunderland. This is model world that is totally breathtaking and outstanding. Book a slot and plan to spend around 2-3 hours there. Trust me, there’s a lot to see. Top tip: make sure you pick up a chocolate from the Lindt factory when you get to Switzerland!

Places: St Georg – kinda hipster, lively, good food and coffee; HafenCity to see the landmark Elbphilharmonie Hamburg concert hall, with its striking facade and cutting-edge acoustics. If you can go inside the concert hall, you must! Eppendorfer is like the Notting Hill of London: beautiful homes and fancy shops. Speicherstadt is an awesome part of the city and the world’s largest warehouse district, close to the harbour and other touristic sites.

Fischereihafen Restaurant An institution in Hamburg and some of the best seafood I’ve had in a long time. Old school vibes but really terrific flavours. If you’re a couple, ask to sit outside along the water. The views of the harbour are lovely.

Pane e Tulipani Industrial-ish Italian restaurant. Apparently in pre-Covid days, the owner pulls the blinds down when the DJ really gets going!

Berta Emil Richard Schneider Excellent brunch spot

An Vegan House V popular vegan Asian joint

Neumann’s Bistro & Weinbar Has winebar in the name. Doesn’t take more convincing than that! The lamb salad was ace.

Luicella’s Ice Cream Parlour Constantly had a long line. But it moves fast and is definitely worth the weight. The portions are big so go hungry. Make sure to try the avocado and white chocolate flavour. Yup, you read that correctly!

Campari Lounge @ The George Hotel Rooftop Bar

Clouds Great views of the city and killer cocktails.

Blanco Coffee Uber hipster with cosy coffee corner. Or sit outside on the bench in the sun

Neither tried nor tested, but researched & recommended…

Cafe Canale Grab a canoe or other boating vessel and boat by here and grab a coffee or drinks whilst you’re on the water

Cafe Gnosa An institution. Good for everything from lunch to coffee and cakes

Le Lion – Bar de Paris Classic cocktails and canapés

The George Hotel Excellent location, spacious rooms and an awesome rooftop bar. Terribly WiFi (although I was told that’s generally the rule throughout hotel and public spaces across the city)

I visited Hamburg in August 2020
