Australia: Melbourne

THINGS TO DO

Places: Hosier Lane; then browse the shops of Flinders Lane; Just northeast of the city centre lies Melbourne’s quirkiest and coolest, neighbourhood: Fitzroy; North of the city centre, Carlton is Melbourne’s most erudite neighbourhood. If you want to travel back in time to art-deco mansions, retro flats, roller coasters, and rollerbladers, head to St Kilda. Half Moon Bay is everyone’s favourite metropolitan beach. Note, the water gets deep quite quickly, making it ideal for swimming laps; if you’re not a good swimmer, stick to the shallower southern stretch, where you can also buy rad fish and chips at the Cerberus Kiosk.

Day Trips: Drive along the Great Ocean Road to the 12 Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge. Also check out Yarra Valley for wine country

EAT

TIP: if you’re from London where you get cuisine from every nation, or Europe and you’re fortunate enough to travel to the likes of Spain, Italy, France etc, I wouldn’t waste your time in Melbourne going to European-style restaurants. Yes they’re delicious, but they’re no different from what you get in London and no better than what you have in those countries themselves. I guess they’re so popular on that side of the world because it’s so far away from the countries themselves. So when you’re in Melbourne, feel free to be a bit more adventurous with the cuisine you pick. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!

ChinChin. Recommended to me by three different people. And now I’m one more!

Doot Doot Doot. Drive to The Jackalope Hotel and sample their exquisite tasting menu. If you can afford it, stay the night. It’s totally banging.

Napier Quarter. Cute wine bar perfect for drinks and nibs

Mr. Miyagi

Movida. Delicious Spanish food

Lune. For croissants

Smith & Daughters. Best vegan food I’ve ever had. Order the egg plant

Lardo. For pizza (people say they’d sell their children for it!) At the start of the city locking down due to the pandemic, they gave our bangs of flour for free with every meal so that people could make their own bread at home. So cute.

Matchamylk Bar Vegan eatery in St Kilda’s. Seriously good puns name on the menu
